Things to consider before buying cement in Ranchi:

Check the Manufacturing Date

Always check the date of manufacturing before buying a cement bag because the strength of cement decreases with time. Ideally, cement should be used within 90 days from the date of manufacturing.

Check the Trademark, ISI Mark and Brand

For assured quality, remember to check the cement bag for Registered Trademark and ISI Mark. Always remember to buy best quality cement from a reputed brand. There are many good cement dealers in the North East and other parts of India - purchase your cement from a trusted cement dealer for a healthy structure.

Check the Net Weight and MRP

Check the cement bag for proper quantity as printed. To avoid loss of quantity, do not buy hook use bags. Also, check the MRP before buying a cement bag to ensure you are not being overcharged.

Check the Cement Grade

Different types of constructions require different grades of cement. Check the grade of the cement –whether it is OPC 43 grade cement, OPC 53 grade cement or best PPC Cement – use the one that is appropriate for your construction need.

IS code printed on the bag should also be checked to compare to grades of cement for Healthier Concrete.

Check the Colour of the Cement

A good quality, healthy cement should be grey in colour with a light greenish shade. It should be homogenous in consistency.

Check the Cement for Lumps

Fresh cement is always moisture-free and without any lumps. It should feel smooth when rubbed in between fingers. Check the cement thoroughly for any lumps and do not buy it if is lumpy as this may affect construction strength.

Check if the Cement Floats

Good quality cement floats in water for some time before sinking. To ensure strong and durable construction, cement should be checked for quality by throwing a small quantity into a bucket of water before mixing it to make concrete. If the OPC 43 grade cement, OPC 53 grade cement or PPC Cement that you plan to use floats in water for a while before sinking, you can be sure about its quality.

Check for Setting

Take a small quality of cement, mix water to make a thick paste and spread it on a glass plate. Keep this plate under water for 24 hours. When you take it out, if the cement is of good quality, the concrete will be perfectly set without any cracks.

Temperature Check

Thrust your hand into the cement bag and you should feel a certain amount of coolness. If the cement feels cool, the quality may be considered satisfactory. Poor quality cement feels warm in your hand.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on Cement:

What is Cement?

Cement is the basic building material required for any kind of construction. Cement is made of using limestone, clay, silica sand, calcium, aluminium and other ingredients. Utmost care should be taken while choosing cement for your construction, it is available in three major grades (OPC, PPC & PSC Grade) and also of many brands to buy online at NirmaanKart Ranchi.

How is Portland cement made?

Cement manufacturers mine materials such as limestone, shale, iron ore, and clay, crushed and screened the rock, and place it in a cement kiln. After being heated to extremely high temperatures, these materials form a small ball called “clinker” that is very finely grounded to produce portland cement.

Lime and silica make up about 85 percent of the ingredients of cement. Other elements include alumina and iron oxide. The rotating kiln that cooks the materials resembles a large horizontal pipe with a diameter of 10 to 15 feet and a length of 300 feet or more. One end is raised slightly. The raw mix is placed in the high end and as the kiln rotates the materials move slowly toward the lower end. Flame jets at the lower end heat all the materials in the kiln to high temperatures that range between 2,700 and 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

This high heat drives off, or calcines, the chemically combined water and carbon dioxide from the raw materials and forms new compounds (tricalcium silicate, dicalcium silicate, tricalcium aluminate and tetracalcium aluminoferrite). For each ton of material that goes into the feed end of the kiln, two thirds of a ton comes out the discharge end, called clinker. This clinker is in the form of marble sized pellets. The clinker is very finely ground to produce portland cement. Manufacturers often add gypsum and/or limestone during the grinding process.

What is difference between cement and concrete?

Although the terms cement and concrete often are used interchangeably, cement is actually an ingredient of concrete. Concrete is a mixture of aggregates and paste. The aggregates are sand and gravel or crushed stone; the paste is water and portland cement.

Cement comprises from 10 to 15 percent of the concrete mix, by volume. Through a process called hydration, the cement and water harden and bind the aggregates into a rocklike mass. This hardening process continues for years meaning that concrete gets stronger as it gets older.

Portland cement is not a brand name, but the generic term for the type of cement used in virtually all concrete, just as stainless is a type of steel and sterling a type of silver. Therefore, there is no such thing as a cement sidewalk, or a cement mixer; the proper terms are concrete sidewalk and concrete mixer.

How do you control the strength of cement concrete?

Cement is the simplest approach to increase strength. The proportion of water to cement in the cement paste holding the particles together is the factor that most significantly affects concrete strength. The concrete will be weaker and vice versa the higher this percentage is. More water will have a negative impact on every measurable good physical characteristic.

What does 28-day strength of cement concrete mean?

Concrete hydrates, becoming stronger and hardening. The process of hydration goes on for a very long time. It begins quickly and then slows down over time. It would take several years before concrete’s ultimate strength could be determined. This would not be feasible, thus the specification drafting authorities decided that all concrete should be tested after 28 days. At this age, a large portion of the hydration has already occurred.

Why does cement concrete crack?

Concrete, like all other materials, will slightly change in volume when it dries out. In typical concrete this change amounts to about 500 millionths. Translated into dimensions-this is about 1/16 of an inch in 10 feet. The reason that contractors put joints in concrete pavements and floors is to allow the concrete to crack in a neat, straight line at the joint when the volume of the concrete changes due to shrinkage.

What are the recommended mixing ratio of good cement concrete?

Learn about Health of Cement on NirmaanKart in Ranchi:

Cement is a finely ground organic hydraulic binder which when mixed with water forms a paste that sets and hardens through a hydraulic reaction. Better the quality of cement, stronger the setting and ultimately a more durable structure. Thus, quality of cement is of supreme importance in any kind construction.

Good quality cement has some unique properties that make the construction not only simpler but far more durable and high strength. The quality of concrete which is made by mixing cement, sand, water and other aggregates in the right proportions depends on the quality of cement being mixed in it. It is this good quality concrete made of fine cement that ensures a good quality structure.

Today, there are a number of top cement companies in the Ranchi, Jharkhand and other parts of India offering best quality PPC and OPC cement. In order to choose the best quality cement, one must do some research on the brands of Cement available in the Ranchi market and understand what the merits of a good cement are. Once you know what to watch out for while procuring cement for your construction needs, you will always buy the best quality cement.

Check the following to buy the right cement for strong, durable and weather-proof structures

Strong Bonding

Good quality cement exudes strong bonding properties. It holds the concrete mixture of cement, sand, water and other aggregates at the optimum level to build a strong and healthy structure.

Proper Setting

The characteristic of a good quality cement should be such that it should quickly transform from fluid state to solid state – that is set firmly. Good concrete made with fine cement is dense and homogenous ensuring proper setting while constructing a healthy structure.

Maximum Strength

Good quality cement is strong and has a very high compressive strength and low tensile strength. This ensures perfect BPS (Bonding & Proper Setting) that leads to a high-strength, durable construction.

Smooth Finishing

The structure and fineness of a good quality cement gives smooth finishing, allows faster strength gaining and ensures long lasting durability. Ultra-fine cement is also more suitable for concrete mixing.

Moisture-proof Packaging

PPC Cement comes with moisture-proof bags. This kind of high quality packaged product may cost 2% to 3% more, but it offers as much as 25% to 35% greater strength and durability. Moisture-proof packaging improves the shelf life of the cement, keeps it fresh, free from moisture and humidity. It is always advisable to use fresh cement and check the date of manufacturing on the cement bag as the cement loses its strength with time. The fresher the cement, the stronger it will be.

Tamper-resistant, Zero Leakage Packaging

The bag containing the cement should be properly laminated and packaged in a way that the product cannot be tampered. There should be no stitching on the bags or any kind of tampering on the bag. Avoid buying hook use bags as these often have leakages resulting in loss of cement quantity and also compromised quality as moisture enters from the leakages.

ISI Marked, Branded Cement

For guaranteed quality, one should always procure cement of a reputed brand from authorised sources only. There are numerous brands available in the market today with some of the top cement companies in India and Ranchi, Jharkhand of best PPC, OPC and other grades of cement. Remember to always check the ISI mark on the cement bag for assurance of quality. MRP, Net Weight and IS code printed on the bag should also be checked.
