Core Building Construction Materials – Bricks
Usage of Bricks in house construction:
For most of the buildings two types of Bricks are used:
- Bricks made of red soil, measuring 9″ x 4.5″ x 3″. They could be table-molded or wire-cut.
- The sizes of cement bricks vary. They come in two varieties: Blocks that are solid or hollow (Hollow blocks are preferable but nowadays they are not easily available)
- Due to its lesser weight than ordinary bricks or cement blocks, fly ash bricks are employed as an alternative.
- You can build walls more quickly with hollow and solid cement bricks than with regular red bricks.
Features of good bricks for construction:
- They ought to exhibit a consistent texture and colour.
- They must not leave lumps or grit behind when shattered.
- Be sure that no saline clay was used to create the bricks.
- Check for uniform and proper burning.
Categories of bricks used in house construction:
- 1st Class Bricks
- 2nd Class Bricks
- 3rd Class Bricks
Features of 1st Class Bricks:
- Size and shape should be ideal.
- Reddish to cherry-red in hue
- Dropped from waist height, it won’t shatter.
- Should not absorb more than 15 to 17% of their own weight if submerged in water for an hour.
- Used for precise work, such as exposed
Features of 2nd Class Bricks:
- Not as homogeneous in shape, size, or burning quality as first-class bricks.
- When submerged in water for an hour, do not absorb more water than 25% of your own weight.
- Excellent for brickwork anywhere additional plastering is required.
Features of 3rd Class Bricks:
- In terms of shape/size and burning, 2nd class bricks are far superior.
- Unbelievably distorted in size and shape, over-burned, fused with additional bricks, and with a honeycomb-like texture.
Features of Jhama/Overburnt Bricks:
- From deep red to black in hue.
- These bricks are inappropriate for use in any type of brickwork and are only utilised in broken form for the brickwork used to consolidate the sub-base of floors and the foundation soil.

Bricks may be purchased directly from the brick fields located close to your area to get it at a lower cost. Keep samples for conformity to ordered quality.
